As I understand it, song mode gives you a performance layer. It records mutes, solos and motion sequences over your assigned patterns. It would be brilliant if you could setup a song to do 64 bars of pattern 1, but as you changed patterns using the pattern set buttons, it recorded that pattern into that song position. So you could capture a complete performance on the fly.
